At Two Nerdy Cats, we believe board games aren’t just about playing: they’re perfect excuses to share, think, laugh, create memories, and let curiosity take the lead. A good game session has a bit of strategy, a smidge of aesthetics, a touch of imagination, and - ideally - a cat claiming the space as their own.

In this article, we'll highlight a few board games that we feel together would create the purrfect game night for Two Nerdy Cats. And the selection isn't random. Each of these games was chosen because we feel it connects, in some way, with the soul of our brand - even though we didn't create them! You don’t need to be a game expert to enjoy them. We’re speaking from experience here - from how it feels to sit down at the table and play, to why these games fit the way we see the world.

Note: Two Nerdy Cats is not affiliated with these board games or sponsored to promote them. We're also a bilingual team, so if you see Spanish versions of the games in some of our photos - don't worry. Most of these are available in either English or Spanish!

The White Castle Duel: A Japanese Board Game Take on the Art of Planning

The White Castle Duel board game components and box

The White Castle: Duel is set in feudal Japan, where two players face each other as rival clans trying to gain prestige and influence inside the famous Himeji Castle. Everything revolves around making careful decisions, managing resources wisely, and squeezing value out of every single turn. It’s a head-to-head experience where nothing is wasted: every action matters, every move is visible to your opponent, and every choice can shift the balance. At the end, the player who planned better and adapted faster takes the victory.

Japanese culture remains a constant reference within the nerd universe that inspires Two Nerdy Cats. Japan - its aesthetics, history, and approach to discipline and strategy - is deeply present in the brand, and The White Castle: Duel captures that tension beautifully. The duel format makes the experience more focused and intense, without losing its elegance or sense of order. It’s not an easy game, but it’s far from inaccessible. It’s ideal for sitting down with one other person, slowing things down, and enjoying a thoughtful battle of decisions. Perfect for a calm afternoon or evening when you want a game that feels intimate, strategic, and deeply immersive.

Patchwork: Sewing Turned Into a Game

Patchwork is a 2 player game about creating a quilt using fabric pieces of different shapes. Every decision involves choosing which piece to take, how to fit it, and when to place it. It’s a spatial puzzle that’s easy to understand, but offers depth if you want to optimize every stitch. The challenge lies in managing space and time - and in accepting that you can’t always have every piece you want.

This game connects directly with the world of sewing, embroidery, and handmade crafts - topics that are already part of the Two Nerdy Cats conversation. Patchwork has a warm, creative theme and feels very close to the experience of making something with patience and attention to detail. It’s ideal for playing as a couple, for a calm evening, when you want a beautiful, relaxed game that can be enjoyed without rushing.

Sushi Go is a fast, visual card game where you build sushi dishes using cards. In each round, you choose a card, keep it, and pass the rest along. Between maki, nigiri, and tempura, you create sets that earn you points, slowly building combinations while trying to anticipate what everyone else is doing.

If there’s one food that represents the personality of Two Nerdy Cats, it’s sushi: simple, aesthetic, and full of detail. Sushi Go has a cheerful, colorful theme that’s easy to understand, making it a perfect game to share with friends, family, or people who aren’t used to playing board games. It’s ideal for starting a game night, breaking the ice, and enjoying the moment without complications.

Alchemists: A Tribute to Scientific Curiosity

Alchemists board game components and box

Spanish edition

Alchemists (or Alquimistas, if you're playing the Spanish version!) is a game centered on alchemy, experiments, and scientific curiosity. Testing formulas, deducing hidden results, and publishing your theories within the game makes the experience feel like a playful laboratory. It invites you to think, try, fail, and try again - capturing our love for science, logic, and experimentation.

We chose it because chemistry is part of the nerd DNA of Two Nerdy Cats. Anything chemistry related instantly reminds us of Dom, the science loving tuxedo cat in our designs - so a game about alchemy and logical deduction simply had to be part of our selection. Alchemists celebrates curiosity, analysis, and the desire to understand how things work. While it can appear to be a complicated game at first, Alchemists rewards patience, curiosity, and the joy of figuring things out step by step. It’s ideal for moments when you want a deeper challenge - a long afternoon or an evening where the plan is to sit down, think, and let your brain happily do its thing.

Kanagawa: When Game Night Calls for Calm

Kanagawa Japanese art board game setup

Kanagawa is inspired by Japanese art schools, where the goal is to create balanced paintings while learning different techniques. Throughout the game, you make subtle decisions that shape your final artwork, without aggressive competition. There’s no rush, but every choice carries meaning. It’s a serene yet deep game, ideal for calm sessions or for disconnecting from the noise of the day. The game length feels just right for this kind of experience, allowing you to stay present without feeling hurried. There’s also a quiet, almost magical detail in its design: no matter how you arrange your painting as you play, the cards always connect, creating a continuous landscape that feels intentional, calm, and complete.

Kanagawa wins us over not only because of its beautiful Japanese theme, but because it invites us to create visual harmony while we play. It speaks to our values through its focus on aesthetics, calm, and contemplation. Kanagawa is meant to be enjoyed slowly, with attention and without noise. It’s ideal for playing in a quiet setting, with coffee or tea, when you’re looking for a game that feels almost meditative.

Couch Kittens: Competing for the Best Spot on the Couch

Couch Kittens is a light, fun game where several cats compete for the best spots on the couch. Each cat has its own personality, and the goal is simply to be as comfortable as possible.

This game had to be here because Two Nerdy Cats is filled with cat lovers. Cats competing for the best place on the couch? Obviously, it belongs on this list. Couch Kittens captures the everyday chaos that comes with living with cats - funny, messy, and adorable. We love this game. It’s perfect for laughing, group play, and closing a game night on a light note - reminding us that sometimes, playing is simply about having a good time. The gameplay is also super easy and fun!
